Extract of the “Mapa de las Villas de San Miguel y San Felipe de los Chichimecas y el pueblo de San Francisco Chamacuero”. This map, which is archived at the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid, was elaborated in 1579 by an unknown illustrator. It was possibly drawn elsewhere based on very detailed notes which have not been found. The map is roughly southeast on top-northwest on bottom. The section of the map here reproduced corresponds to the southern part of our study region. The three place names in the title of the map correspond to the current cities of San Miguel de Allende, San Felipe Torres Mochas, and Comonfort in the Mexican state of Guanajuato.
