Monthly SST trends during the period 1976–2099 for LMEs around North America. SST Trends (°C decade–1), computed for each model from the CMIP5 (red) and CESM-LENS (blue) experiments, are shown in box and whiskers format, where the end points indicate the maximum and minimum values, the box boundaries indicate the inter-quartile range (25% to 75%), and the median is the central line. The larger spread in CMIP5 relative to CESM-LENS indicates the range of trends is substantially greater among different models than due to internal variability in an individual model.
