Teaching Public History: A Cross-Cultural Experiment: The First Public History Faculty Training Program in China

Na Li is research fellow at Chongqing University and adjunct professor at Shanghai Normal University. She is at the forefront of efforts to research and establish public history in China. Her research focuses on integrating public history in urban preservation. Her first book, Kensington Market: Collective Memory, Public History, and Toronto’s Urban Landscape (2015), incorporates collective memory in urban landscape interpretation and preservation. Her articles have appeared in The Public Historian, Public History Review, The Oxford Handbook of Urban Planning, and a number of premium Chinese journals. She is a regular contributor (core author) for Public History Weekly, a multilingual blog-journal for history and civics education. Na Li is completing her second book, An Introduction to Public History (Chinese), to be published by Peking University.

Martha A. Sandweiss is professor of history at Princeton University. She began her career as a museum curator and director and worked at Amherst College for twenty years before joining the Princeton faculty in 2009. Her many books include the award winning Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception across the Color Line (2009) and Print the Legend: Photography and the American West (2002). She is the editor of Photography in Nineteenth-Century America, co-editor of the Oxford History of the American West, and author of numerous other works on western American history and visual culture.
