Iris H. Wilson Engstrand, born in Los Angeles and raised in Southern California, earned her BA, MA, and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. She has published numerous articles, chapters, and books on Spanish exploration, general California history, and specifically San Diego. These include: William Wolfskill: Frontier Trapper to California Ranchero (1965), Spanish Scientists in the New World: The Eighteenth Century Expeditions (1981), and San Diego: California’s Cornerstone (2005). She is Professor of History at the University of San Diego and co-edits The Journal of San Diego History.
