The Crags Country Club: The Origins of Malibu Creek State Park, A Community of Civic-Minded Leaders, and Visionary Conservation

Gary Liss has his B.A. degree in Geography with an emphasis in Cartography/GIS. He has deep roots in the Mulwood section of Calabasas, having grown up there through the 1960s/70s, and for many years has enjoyed a multitude of memorable hikes throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. For the last ten years, he has been helping the Malibu Creek Docents with their State Park trail map and, as a result, has acquired a growing interest in the Crags Country Club and early settler history of Malibu Creek State Park and vicinity. Since the discovery of the largely forgotten and nearly lost photograph collection of Frank and Josephine Case, uncovering the story of Frank and Josephine Case and their granddaughter Jane Pier, this article was conceived and eventually turned into a reality with the help of Merry Ovnick and the Southern California Quarterly, Wendy Mullins, Linda Dowler, Ann Suhr, and Linda Ward-Skipworth.
