I enjoyed a deep, enduring personal friendship and consummate collaborative professional partnership with David Covin. I had the time over many years to observe him in the pursuit of his hopes and dreams. In his aspirations he always struck me as being in the service of his charges, notwithstanding his profound clarity of purpose. He was an academic who was an inveterate activist, and succeeded in merging the two as he mentored, wrote, taught, and went to the barricade. He gave generously in training others and creating frameworks for them to grow. He was the ultimate collaborator, putting his partners and acolytes at ease with his steady gaze, casual interventions, and deft, wicked wit. Those qualities made him the perfect model of the servant scholar, coolly giving up his wisdom, and living it out in the communities he served.
