D. Berton Emerson is Associate Professor of English and Director of the Honors Program at Whitworth University. His writings on nineteenth-century American literature and culture have appeared in Nineteenth-Century Literature, American Literature, ESQ, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. With Gregory Laski, he is coediting a volume of keywords essays titled Democracies in America, which will be published by Oxford University Press. His current book project, “American Literary Misfits: Vernacular Aesthetics and Alternative Democracies, 1830–1860,” is under review.
