Caleb Smith, Professor of English at Yale University, is the author of The Oracle and the Curse: A Poetics of Justice from the Revolution to the Civil War (2013) and The Prison and the American Imagination (2009). He is also editor of the Modern Library edition of Austin Reed’s The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict (2016). He is now working on a new book about the history of distraction and the disciplines of attention.
