Abstract
Using as a point of departure the deaths of the Mexican cinematic and musical icon Jorge Negrete, and the lead vocalist of the Durango band K-Paz de la Sierra of Sergio Góómez, which took place in December of 1953 and December of 2007 respectively, this essay argues that in recent decades a shift in the paradigm of Mexicaness occurred: The departure from one forged in the imaginary of the center Bajio region of Mexico (this is to say the charro and mariachi music) toward one that is located in the northern border and in the United States.
