The article examines the crisis of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional's corporative-sectorial role by examining the behavior of urban, mixed, and rural electoral districts during the 1988 election. It also considers two aspects of that crisis: the impact of urbanization on the sectoral organizations which mobilized voters and the declining ability of the rural political structures to deliver the vote.
