Welcome to our first issue of 2024! As always, we strive this year to publish novel articles that showcase the rich array of topics in the multidisciplinary field of Mexican studies and exciting new trends in the field. The current issue illustrates this approach. In the first essay, Richard Anthony Grijalva (University of Texas at Austin) returns to José Servando Teresa de Mier’s “Carta de despedida a los mexicanos” to examine why the name México should be spelled with an x rather than a j. The essay reveals a debate originated by European and American Hispanics, and continued by Spaniards and Mexicans to this day. Grijalva argues that at the core of this debate are issues of Mexican identity and sense of nationhood that originated in early 1821, demonstrating the importance of analyzing the relationship between linguistics, history, and cultural identity.
