I begin with the sad note about Jaime Rodríguez’s death in June 2022. Rodríguez (1940–2022) was the founding editor of MS/EM in 1984. A highly regarded scholar of Mexican history, he was also founding director of the Latin American Studies Program at the University of California, Irvine (now the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies). At the time of his passing, he was professor emeritus of history at the University of California, Irvine. We are saddened about his loss and admire his vision when he founded MS/EM. To recognize and reflect on his path-breaking scholarship trajectory as historian, as well as other seminal contributions, we plan to publish a few obituary essays in a future issue.
