Review: Agustín Lara: A Cultural Biography by Andrew Grant Wood
Randall C. Kohl holds an MA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai‘i and a Doctorate in History and Regional Studies from the Universidad Veracruzana (UV). He has published several texts on the Veracruz son jarocho tradition and other music, including Ecos de La Bamba: una historia etnomusicológica sobre el son jarocho de Veracruz (IVEC, 2007); Escritos de un náufrago habitual: ensayos sobre el son jarocho y otros temas (UV, 2010); Octaviano Yáñez: anthology of arrangements and compositions for guitar (EAE, 2011); and Declaraciones del Son (Estado de Veracruz, 2013). He has also recorded several CDs of his own musical compositions, such as Dos lados del corazón and Landscapes, as well as those of Octaviano Yáñez, the late nineteenth to early twentieth century Mexican guitarist (available at www.cdbaby.com/Artist/RCKohl). He is currently on the music faculty of the UV and a member of Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Investigadores.
