Studies have revealed that engaging with music can have a multitude of positive effects on one’s health and social well-being. Consequently, extensive research has been conducted on this subject, frequently employing self-reported surveys. However, a notable gap exists in the availability of Spanish-adapted questionnaires catering to the Spanish-speaking population. Addressing this need, the present study introduces the translation, adaptation, and validation to Spanish of the Music Use and Background Questionnaire (MUSEBAQ), a multi-modular self-report instrument that measures music engagement. The sample consisted of 1,493 students of Social Sciences in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Exploratory factor analysis and reliability tests were conducted on the four modules and after, confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the modules of Music Capacities and Use of Music to confirm the structural validity (modules of Musicianship and Music Preferences are used for the characterization of the sample). The final adapted version showed a robust configuration of the internal structure, revealing high reliability overall and by dimensions. Therefore, the adaptation of the MUSEBAQ questionnaire combines the necessary technical characteristics to be considered a valid a reliable tool to measure music engagement, creating opportunities of further research in the Spanish-speaking population.
