PERFORMANCE CUES IN MUSIC can be related to the structure of a production, but can also exist separately from the structural features. Which cues are retained from perception to performance? Pianists listened to melodies containing intensity and articulation cues and performed similar metrically ambiguous target melodies. Pianists' performances persisted in the metrically unrelated articulation cues. Pianists did not perform metrically strong beats with more intensity as in the primes, but they lengthened expected strong beats relative to weak beats. This recoding of meter using articulation cues instead of intensity cues suggests an abstract mental representation of meter.
