Bên trong vỏ kén vàng [Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell] follows Thiện, portrayed by Lê Phong Vũ, as he returns to his home village—a rural Catholic community in the Central Highlands of Vietnam—to organize his sister-in-law’s funeral. The sister-in-law, Hạnh, passed away in a tragic motorbike crash, leaving her son, Thiện’s five-year-old nephew, alone. This incident propels the protagonist into a quest to find his older brother, who disappeared years earlier. The search allows Thiện a respite from life in Sài Gòn and the opportunity to contemplate questions of faith. Navigating the diverse devotions of those around him—including his ex-girlfriend, now a nun—Thiện’s journey evolves into a search for meaning beyond self-interest. Intending to raise questions rather than preach, the film invites the audience to join Thiện on his journey, observe his encounters, and reflect on the role of faith in life.
