This paper traces the history of the Vietnamese national anthem. It examines the selection of Van Cao's "Tiêên quâân ca" [Advancing Army Song] and the various alternatives that existed during Vietnam's unsettled twentieth century history. The meaning of the national anthem is also compared with an earlier music of the state, the ritual music of the court.
