Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai is a familiar presence in Vietnam’s contemporary art scene. Born in Hà Nội in 1983, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai graduated from Huế College of Arts in 2006 and Mahasarakham University, Thailand, in 2012. She is known for her contributions to the artistic community of Huế, having started her practice there in the late 2000s and currently serving as a lecturer at her former alma mater. The recipient of a 2014 Pollock-Krasner grant and a 2021 Artist Excellence Award presented by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai has dedicated nearly a decade to addressing issues of displacement, statelessness, and exclusion in and beyond Southeast Asia in an understated yet powerful visual language.1 Her imagery reflects a raw honesty and unwavering commitment to amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
