This dense and detailed volume on the reconstruction of the Baixa of Lisbon from 1755 to 1807 is the result of Maria Helena Ribeiro dos Santos’s master’s and doctoral theses and her professional experience from 1988 to today as técnica superior (senior technician) of the Direcção-Geral do Património Cultural (General Directorate of Cultural Heritage) in Lisbon. The Baixa Pombalina corresponds to the part of Lisbon’s historic center located between Rossio Square and Praça do Comércio, abutting the Tejo (Tagus) River’s estuary. It is a neighborhood and a monumental urban complex generally celebrated as a key example of reformed European Enlightenment urban planning.
