With this editorial I would like to note some changes to the layout of JSAH and JSAH Online intended to foreground the use of keywords at the journal.

Until now, although scholars who have submitted their work to JSAH have self-selected descriptive keywords in preparing their essays for publication, these terms have remained invisible to both authors and readers in the final products. Recently, however, in ongoing conversations, the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee and I have agreed that it would be helpful to make keywords visible across both JSAH’s print and digital platforms. The use of such terms in research publications is widespread: keyword searches offer an essential means of facilitating research, enabling readers to quickly identify the primary focus of a particular investigation or analysis through the terms chosen by the author to characterize the work.
