Managing change is an ongoing challenge for cities—and architects—around the world. As some of our megalopolises exceed populations of 35 million through conurbation, they must learn how to deal with aging historical cores that have so often been frozen into inert museum pieces. At the same time, ever-increasing numbers of modernist buildings fall prey to the wrecking ball. Preservation of the past and destruction of the new—the time warp invoked by the title—are at the heart of Cronocaos, curated by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu from the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), and staged first at the Venice Biennale in 2010 and then at the New Museum in New York in 2011.
