These final two reviews in the series I have curated explore the entanglement of space, feeling, and media in video works on two seemingly opposite and profoundly disconnected worlds, the American suburb and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On the one hand is the staging of perpetual envy and the compulsion to keep up relentlessly with neighbors always believed to have more of what is desired. On the other hand is the staging of perpetual pity and the compulsion to remain detached from those believed to have more of what is least desired. The reviews show how the perception of these two spaces is not only sustained by particular images, but the spaces themselves are structured by those images. Just as the music video comes out of the suburbs as itself a suburban work never far from its own conditions...
