The French architect and theorist Pierre Patte, long credited for having been the first to illustrate a city street with its buildings and sewer system shown in section, probably copied the idea from a rendering made more than ten years earlier by Portuguese engineer Eugénio dos Santos as part of a project for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. The expatriate Portuguese doctor and Parisian resident António Ribeiro S anches, who was connected with the reconstruction effort, seems to have been the conduit between the two.
