Barbara Harlow, professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Texas at Austin, is the author of After Lives: Legacies of Revolutionary Writing (Verso, 1996), and is completing a study, Looked Class, Talked Red, of the work of Ruth First, South African historian and antiapartheid activist.
