Irena Hayter is an associate professor of Japanese studies at the University of Leeds. She is coeditor of and contributor to Tenkō: Cultures of Political Conversion in Transwar Japan (Routledge, 2021); her essay in the volume is entitled “The Disjointed Narratives and Fractured Subjects of Takami Jun.” She is completing a monograph on women, urban spectacle, and cinema in interwar Japan.
