About
Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences (HSNS) reveals the diverse history scientific knowledge, practices, communities, and institutions as they have developed from the early modern to the contemporary era. We invite original research articles of up to 15,000 words, as well as proposals for special issues and essay reviews. All research articles are submitted to robust peer and editorial review.
Established in 1969 as Historical Studies in the Physical Sciences, HSNS has since expanded its scope to cover the entirety of the natural sciences in the modern world, broadly understood. Published five times a year, HSNS now aims to advance historical insight into broad range of scientific and technical fields, across the globe and throughout the modern era.
HSNS invites submissions that address the historical development of the biological, chemical, and physical sciences from any methodological perspective. Our remit includes studies motivated by the study of gender, race, sexuality, the environment, and other topics.
Submitted articles are expected to be well-researched, thoughtfully argued pieces that reach beyond a descriptive narrative of a historical event or case study and engage with the professional literature on the history of the natural sciences. Authors are asked to review the HSNS author guidelines prior to submission.
Editorial inquiries should be directed to the Chair of the Editorial Board, Joseph D. Martin ([email protected]).
