Julius Keller is generally credited for inventing Clams Casino at New York City's Narragensett Pier in 1917 for Mrs. Paran Stevens. A careful examination of primary sources does not confirm this claim. Our survey of historic American cookbooks and newspapers revealed strikingly similar dishes existing as early as 1883. Mr. Keller's connection with the Narragensett Pier and Mrs. Stevens are well documented. The Pier, however, was on the Rhode Island shore. Clams Casino is an excellent example of food lore. Dishes are not invented; they evolve.
