For a few years beginning in 1971, the restaurant FOOD served as a center of life for a diverse group of artists who called Manhattan's SoHo home. Founded by local artists Carol Goodden, Gordon Matta-Clark and Tina Girouard, FOOD's flexible working hours and creative, exotic, homemade dishes added to the growing cultural and communal energy of a transitional neighborhood of raw lofts and alternative art spaces. The restaurant served not just as a place to work and eat: Matta-Clark designed the space's unorthodox layout, conceptual dinners were served on Sunday nights, and the whole functioned less according to the imperatives of a business than of an experiment in the melding of art and life.
