A deep emotional ambivalence settled over me as I read this collection. With contributions from students, staff, and scholars, the book documents the efforts of those involved in organizing for student food and basic needs security on college campuses across the United States. On the one hand, my spirits were buoyed by the dedication of the contributors and their networks of allies. Their efforts unambiguously reveal a deep humanity and an inspired persistence in the face of overwhelming, ongoing inequity and injustice. On the other hand, I was gripped by a disquieting combination of melancholy, mourning, and outrage that their efforts are needed in the first place.
