gwendolyn meyer was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She studied photography at California College of the Arts in Oakland, California, and lives in Marin County, California. She enjoys photographing food as it is encountered informally and day to day in different cultures. Meyer spends part of each year traveling to Africa. Over the past three years she has been photographing the foods of Swahili culture on the east coast of Africa.
