Abstract Devin McKinney: Gerry. Director Gus Van Sant uses expressive landscape, long takes, and oblique, minimal dialogue to fashion a new version of the archetypal passage into manhood. Intensely abstract means are brought to bear on a narrative which crosses cultures and eras, but also has intimate thematic connections to Van Sant's previous work.
