This festival report discusses the 2024 edition of the Locarno Film Festival in relation to the history of cinema, including a retrospective of Columbia Pictures at 100, and the current state of the film industry. The festival’s attempt to self-reflexively explore its own role in the food chain of cinema was something that took place both on and off screen. The many titles showcased spoke to the challenges facing cinema as well as the societies that produce and consume them. Their significance is something that will also depend on the distributive trajectories these films will have.
