This essay is an introduction to the first English-language publication of a chapter from Carlos Fuentes's Spanish-language book Pantallas de Plata (Silver Screens). Fuentes, one of Mexico's most widely read novelists abroad and one of the leading Latin American writers of the twentieth century, had a long and passionate relationship with cinema.

Ignacio M. Sánchez Prado is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author of Poesía para nada (Editorial Losada, 2005), Naciones intelectuales: Las fundaciones de la modernidad literaria mexicana (1917–1959) (Purdue University Press, 2009), and Screening Neoliberalism: Mexican Cinema 1988–2012 (Vanderbilt University Press, 2014).
