Garrett Stewart, James O. Freedman Professor of Letters at the University of Iowa, is the author, along with books on fiction, painting, and conceptual art, of Between Film and Screen: Modernism’s Photo Synthesis (1999) and Framed Time: Toward a Postfilmic Cinema (2007). As previewed in a recent article for Film Quarterly, “Cinema and Surveillance” (Summer 2013), his newest study, Closed Circuits: Screening Narrative Surveillance, is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press in 2014.
