Prefaced by remarks about methodology, the article presents the author's selection of the best films released in the U.S., 2008 (including one archival reissue). The top three are all city films: Jia Zhang-ke's 24 City, Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg, and Terence Davies's Of Time and the City.
