ABSTRACT Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ includes many digital special effects and significant departures from the physical facts of scourging and crucifixion.Yet viewers frequently described the film as ““realistic.”” The essay explores this paradox in terms of the relative weight of importance viewers ascribe to film style as opposed to content.
