Abstract Since the late 1980s, veteran independent filmmaker James Benning has been exploring the American West in a series of visually stunning and conceptually sophisticated feature films, largely ignored by American programmers and the American critical establishment. In ““Exploring the New West,”” Benning and Scott MacDonald discuss these films, revealing their often intricate design and the wide variety of ways in which they engage such issues as the environment and racial politics.
Exploring the New West: An Interview with James Benning
Scott MacDonald has just published the fourth volume of his series, A Critical Cinema: Interviews with Independent Filmmakers, with the University of California Press. His The Garden in the Machine: A Field Guide to Independent Films about Place (also with UC Press) appeared in 2002. He teaches at Bard College.
