This special section chronicles Ethnic Studies at the K–12 level and in higher education, or any other relevant developments. Each entry provides a brief description, a loose date noted by Ethnic Studies Review, and external links to media coverage where accessible. An overview map is included to provide context for the geography of Ethnic Studies growth and development.

The intention of the communiques are to provide a catalog of these developments, to suggest potential models for additional efforts, and to facilitate partnerships or alliances. This listing is not intended to be comprehensive. All information was gathered informally using search engine keyword alerts. Submissions to future lists are welcome.

  • Oregon State University created a new Indigenous Studies minor, available for on-campus and e-campus students August 9, 2022. The Oregonian.

  • Baruch College (City College of New York) launches Black and Latino Studies major September 8, 2022. Baruch College website.

  • Fresno Unified School adds 2-semester Ethnic Studies course graduation requirement September 9, 2022. The Fresno Bee.

  • Santa Rosa Junior College (CA) created a new Ethnic Studies department, with new hires October 11, 2022. The Oak Leaf.

  • The states of Connecticut, Illinois, and New Jersey all passed recent legislation requiring Asian American studies in K–12 curricula; Rhode Island is next after governor’s approval October 18, 2022. Insight into Diversity.

  • East Los Angeles Community College added a new program in Central American Studies October 21, 2022. Cal Matters.

  • Baylor University (TX) students will soon be able to minor in Ethnic Studies November 28, 2022. Baylor Lariat.

  • Students at Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, and Haverford Colleges (PA) can now minor in Asian American Studies December 1, 2022. The Phoenix.

  • New Mexico State University has approved a new minor in Chicano/a Studies, to go along with its existing major February 23, 2023. The Round Up.
