Elementa’s Ecology and Earth Systems domain aims to publish original research on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the context of human impacts on the environment. The scope encompasses:

• All aspects of ecology from population to landscape scales, including conservation and restoration ecology
• Biogeochemistry
• Soil science
• Limnology
• Geomorphology
• Ecohydrology
• Ecophysiology

Studies may focus on:

• Terrestrial ecosystems
• Lakes, rivers, and streams
• Estuaries
• The critical zone
• Polar environments
• The interfaces between these systems

Any research approach will be considered, from empirical studies to theory, modeling, and synthesis. We particularly seek manuscripts that link research and conclusions to human impacts such as:

• Climate-caused ecological changes
• Land use change
• Pollutants
• Nutrient enrichment
• Urbanization
• Other emerging challenges

Elementa strives to be a home for emerging interdisciplinary research. We highly encourage contributions that bridge Ecology and Earth Systems with any of the other Elementa domains of Atmospheric Science, Ocean Science, or Sustainability Transitions. Such submissions will be co-evaluated with the respective editors of those domains.
