2023 APC Change Information
As of January 1, 2023, the article processing charge (APC) increased from $1,450 to $1,950 for Research, Review, Special Feature Overview, Policy Bridge, and Practice Bridge articles published in Elementa. Any of these article types submitted to the journal prior to January 1, 2023, but published after that date will be charged the original APC of $1,450. The APC for Commentary and Comment and Reply articles will remain $650.
There have been no APC increases since the journal was launched in 2013 even as the journal has grown in size and reputation. This APC change will ensure that Elementa can keep pace with rising operational costs and continue to publish original and high-quality open access articles in atmospheric science, ecology and earth science, ocean science, sustainability transitions, and their related fields. Even with this increase, an APC of $1,950 still keeps the cost of publishing in Elementa quite competitive with similar journals.
Despite this change, Elementa remains committed to equity in publishing. A portion of every APC (currently, $275) will continue to be set aside for the journal’s waiver fund, and the journal will continue to offer APC waivers and discounts for corresponding authors who lack the funding to pay publication fees. More information about the various types of APC discounts and waivers available to Elementa authors can be found on the Publication Fees page. We also recommend that authors contact their institutions to determine whether there are open access publication funds available for scholars and researchers.
University of California Press and the Elementa Editors-In-Chief appreciate the contributions and support of the scientific community over the journal’s first 10 years of life. This change will help assure that the journal has many more years of success ahead. Please contact us if you have any questions.
