Maurice Meisner is Harvey Goldberg Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Visiting Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. His books include The Deng Xiaoping Era: An Inquiry into the Fate of Chinese Socialism (New York: Hill and Wang, 1996) and the recently published third edition of Mao’s China and After (New York: Free Press, 1999).
