James E. Cronin is a professor of history at Boston College and an affiliate of the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. His books include The Politics of State Expansion: War, State, and Society in Twentieth-Century Britain (London: Routledge, 1991) and The World the Cold War Made: Order, Chaos, and the Return of History (New York: Routledge, 1996).
