Mask Juergensmeyer is a professor of sociology and director of global and international studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His most recent book is The New Cold War? Religious Nationalism Confronts the Secular State (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993), on which this article is based. He is currently writing a book on religious terrorism.
