Barry Naughton is an associate professor of economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies of the University of California, San Diego. His book on Chinese economic reforms, Growing Out of the Plan (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) appeared last year, and a volume coedited with John McMillan, Reforming Asian Socialism: The Growth of Market Institutions (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press) has ju st been published.
