William G. Mayer is an assistant professor of political science at Northeastern University. He is the author of The Changing American Mind (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1992), a comprehensive study of changes in American public opinion between 1960 and 1988, and is currently editing a volume of essays on the presidential nomination process.
