Edward Friedman is a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His most recent book, Chinese Village, Socialist State (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1991), was selected by the Association of Asian Studies as the best book on twentieth-century China. He is the editor of the forthcoming The Politics of Democratization (Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press).
