Stephen Viederman is president of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation, a philanthropy supporting environmental and reproductive rights activities in North and South America; he is also vice president of the International Society of Ecological Economics. He has previously been involved with population and development planning activities in a number of countries. This article is a revised version of a talk given at Stanford University in November 1991.
