Volker Perthes teaches at the American University of Beirut and is currently at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Ebenhausen, Germany. His publications include Staat und Gesellschaft in Syrien, 1970-1989 (Hamburg: Deutsches Orient-Institut, 1990) and Regionale Auswirkungen des zweiten Golfkrieges (Bonn and Duisburg: Institute for Development and Peace, 1991).
