Reforming the Countryside

Tyrene White, an assistant professor of political science at Swarthmore College, is completing a book entitled Against the Grain: The State-Peasant Struggle Over Child-Bearing in Contemporary China. She is currently researching rural political reform and institutional development. Research for this article was supported by a grant from the CSCPRC and the United States Information Agency.
