Richard L. Sklar is a professor of political science at the University of California at Los Angeles and a former president of the African Studies Association, His latest book, coauthored with C. S. Whitaker, is African Politics and Problems in Development (Boulder, Col.: Lynne Rienner, 1991).

Mark Strege is currently completing his master’s degree in African studies at the University of California at Los Angeles. He has previously served with the Peace Corps as an agricultural extension agent in Mali.
